Pepper, Water and Dish Soap

This is a fun easy experiment to demonstrate the properties of surface tension.

Materials:

  • a plate
  • pepper
  • dish soap
  • a toothpick or knife or fork or finger
  • water

Procedure:

  • add water to a plate
  • sprinkle pepper on the water
  • dip the toothpick into some dishsoap
  • touch the toothpick to the middle of the pepper water

Observations:

  • What did you observe?
  • Can you explain what is happening?
  • Why does the pepper move so fast?
